Furry, unwanted friends facing challenges. Folks who need a friend. Unexpected friends who need to help and be helped. The Friends for Folks dog training program at the Lexington Correctional Complex enables inmates to train otherwise unadoptable dogs for placement with older folks, families and facilities such as the Norman Veterans Center.
This highly successful program is expanding to other Oklahoma prisons in hopes of bringing positive change to inmates, abandoned dogs and people in need of a companion all across Oklahoma – and beyond. The Oklahoman Veterinary Medicine Association recently endorsed the program, founded in 1990, and it has gained national and international recognition for its effectiveness.
